Column shear glitch effect for vertical strips
Column Shear leans each selected vertical strip by its own amount. The picture bends in columns instead of tearing along one diagonal.
Horizontal edges show the lean. A narrow column reads as a fine comb; a wide column reads as a longer bend.
Creative applications
- Bend poster lettering into uneven vertical strips.
- Give a portrait a columnar lean while leaving some strips upright.
Starting workflow
- Open Column Shear on an image with horizontal edges.
- Set Column width, then raise Shear until the strips lean without losing the subject.
- Lower Coverage to leave some columns straight.
Key controls

Move Shear away from zero to lean the selected columns. Zero is unchanged.
Default: 0.16 · Range: -0.35 to 0.35
- Column width
Use a narrow Column width for a fine comb and a wider one for longer bends.
Default: 8% · Range: 1% to 25%
- Coverage
Lower Coverage so some vertical strips stay upright.
Default: 0.8 · Range: 0 to 1
Practical tips
- Use Waveform Tear when you want one diagonal seam across the whole frame.
- Use Slice Shift when the interruption should be a horizontal band.
- Negative and positive Shear lean the columns as a group; each strip still takes its own share.
Limitations
- Columns lean in the image plane. This effect does not fold the picture into depth.
